Songbooks

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know...long time no blog. I am beginning my literacy task force reading by the poolside (isn't it great to be an educator? and a big thanks to the Brown's who have an amazing pool and are so generous). As I was reading, I am constantly thinking of what I'll be doing in my classroom in the fall. Do other people find Reading and Writing Workshop taking over their mind and allowing them to embrace more planning for the future? Or am I just obsessed?

You all (whoever reads this) have always been so encouraging and have great ideas...thought I'd throw out a question. Does anyone have great songbooks they use in the beginning of the year with their class? For new readers, I have second grade...and will have 3 identified students who most likely are non-readers or minimal...Looking for all great ideas to incorporate! Thanks in advance!

I am thinking the same thing. Do you suppose the library would have any? Have you searched it on Amazon.com? Also, I teach first grade and was just going to make a small book for my kiddos with the book maker and just think of allthe onesthat I know. I think that is aboutthe same idea. Don't you think?

By the way, I did miss you blogging. It was great to see your new post.
I too am an obsessed reading and writing junkie during the summer.
First step: admitting you have a problem!

Hey Cathy, I usually read/sing from the books "Take Me Out of the Bathtub," "I'm Still Here in the Bathtub," and "Are You Quite Polite?"

They're really funny, the kids love them, and they're songs made up to the tunes of popular songs you already know. Don't know if you want funny or not, but hey, it may be a start.

One song my kids love is "I'm a Menace" to the tune of Frair Jaques (no clue how to spell that!):

I'm a menace
I play tennis
In my house
In my room
Didn't know a raquet
Could hit a lamp and crack it
I smell doom
In my room

There are lots more verses that are just hilarious! Hope this helps a little.

Another idea...I love the book "You Read To Me, I'll Read To You" by Mary Ann Hoberman. She also has two others that are great too...here's the back cover poem (the book reads just like this, but this sums up how it works):

Here's a book
With something new--
You read to me
I'll read to you!

We'll read each page
To one another--
You'll read one side,
I read the other.

But who will read--
Now guess the riddle--
When the words are
In the middle?

The answer's easy!
Plain as pie!
We'll read together,
You and I.

It's kinda like poems for two voices.

Love it, love it.

It is such a breath of fresh air to hear teachers say they enjoy reading about school stuff even when they are NOT in school. I also do my best summer reading by the pool. I'd rather do that then about anything. (I did say about.) I am a friend of Jen and Sarah's and caught your blog on their sites! Keep reading!

Cathy, Write on Kathy, made a commment. She is our facilitator. She is way cool, like Ruth and has a wealth of knowledge. You will dig her posts. Go check her out sometime.
It was very fun getting to know you today. I hope you will keep blogging.

I am obsessed with making this work for next year. I am excited and hope to get in on these discussions with jen barney and sarah amick.
I don't have any suggestions for you in the area of sing song books. But I'll keep an ear open.

I teach 1st grade and I have a collection of books made from songs that most of my children already know. Is this what you had in mind?

I have books such as: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, The Wheels On The Bus, 5 Little Ducks, etc. We also make our own version of books such as May There Always Be...( A folksong that has been made into a book)

I usually study these books near the beginning of the year when I have a group of non-readers that can experience success with these books. I have picked up these types of books everywhere. Including my favorite source...Goodwill.

Thanks for blogging, I love to read it.

I am just reading this post and yes I too am addicted to the pursuits of reading and writing workshop and a personal relationship with God. I am also a teacher (former catholic school teacher now working and loving my first year in a public school). Whenever I get a chance to read your blog, I connect with your feelings and thoughts. I love introducing the year with songs books (aren't they the greatest books to support many different readers). My kids end up fighting over The Lady with the Alligator Purse and A Hunting We Will Go. I have a basket full of others I use for shared reading. I also saw this Little Light of Mine at Half Price Books today and picked it up.
I am meeting with friends at A Year of Reading to get advice and tips for setting up my own blog in the next few weeks. I would love to connect.
